Specialty Shoes

What are they?

There are several types of specialty horseshoes, each designed to address specific hoof health issues, performance needs, or environmental conditions.

What are some examples?

--- 1 ---  Bar shoes

Types: Egg bar, heart bar, straight bar.

Purpose: Provide extra support and distribute weight more evenly.

Why: Often used for horses with navicular issues, quarter cracks, or laminitis.

--- 2 ---  Traction Shoes

Purpose: Equipped with studs, borium, or other traction devices.

Why: Help prevent slipping on icy, wet, or uneven terrain—commonly used for working or performance horses.

--- 3 ---  Rocker-Toe or Rolled Toe

Purpose: Modify the breakover point of the hoof.

Why: Reduces strain on tendons and ligaments, often used in horses with joint or soft tissue issues.

--- 4 ---  Aluminum Shoes

Purpose: Lightweight, often used in performance horses.

Why: Reduce fatigue and improve movement in disciplines like racing or dressage.

--- 5 ---  Sliders

Purpose: Smooth, flat shoes designed to allow controlled sliding.

Why: Used in reining and other Western performance disciplines to help horses perform long, balanced sliding stops.

--- 6 ---  Extended Heels

Purpose: Shoes with heels that extend beyond the hoof.

Why: Provide additional support and leverage for certain performance or therapeutic needs, often used to enhance propulsion or support soft tissue structures like tendons.

--- 7 ---  Concave Shoes

Purpose: Forged with a U-shaped channel on the ground surface.

Why: Improve traction, reduce weight, and encourage self-cleaning of debris—popular in eventing and jumping disciplines.

--- 8 ---  Rim Shoes

Purpose: Feature a raised inner rim or lip around the shoe.

Why: Increase traction and grip, especially helpful for sports like barrel racing or jumping where quick turns and takeoffs are needed.
